Forensic Interviews

What is a Forensic Interview?

The forensic interview is a child-friendly and semi-structured conversation, with the purpose of gathering factual information regarding possible event(s) the child experienced.

The trained interviewer interviews at a level consistent with the child’s age and developmental ability. All sessions are digitally recorded to minimize the number of times a child must share his or her experiences. Law enforcement and the Department of Family and Protective Services can oversee the interview via a closed-circuit monitor.

This approach allows investigative parties to thoroughly assess child safety issues and other possible criminal offenses that may have been committed, all while meeting the emotional needs of the child.

The successful prosecution of child abuse cases begins with a thorough investigation.

My child was scheduled for a Forensic Interivew, what should I tell them?

It is important to let your child know they are going to a safe place to talk about what happened. The most important thing your child should know is, to tell the truth.

What should I expect when I arrive for my child's Forensic Interview?

When you arrive, please ring our front doorbell to let our receptionist know that you’re here for an appointment. They will then buzz you into the building and start the check-in process.

You will then be greeted by a staff member who will escort you to a private family room where you will stay for the duration of the appointment. Your child will meet the Forensic Interviewer who will then interview in a separate room.

While your child is being interviewed, the Family Advocate or victim services personnel will meet with you and be available for you in the family room to provide you with information, answer your questions, and offer support throughout the duration of your appointment. Once your child’s interview is completed, you will meet with the investigators on your case, and they will provide you with any additional information.

After the interview, will I or my child be able to watch it?

WCCAC does not release recordings of the interviews to non-investigative parties.

Is a Forensic Interview similar to a police interrogation?

WCCAC is a neutral third party organization that facilitates the investigation process. A forensic interview is conducted by our trained forensic interviewers. The interviewer interviews at a level consistent with the child’s age and developmental ability.
